Many customers have been asking for the ability to have Windows Server Backup send notification of the job status by e-mail.This can actually be configured in a very simple way. The way to do this is simply to attach a scheduled job to certain events from the Windows Event Log.I will explain how to do this here.
The event ID of 4 as we have configured here is the event ID for a successfull job.Obviously you need to create similar tasks for failed jobs. The event ID’s for jobs with warning or failed status is 5,8,9,17,18,19,20,21,22,49,50,52,100,517,518,521,527,528,544,545,546,561,564,612.To create theese additional tasks quickly, you can export the allready created task to an XML file. When this is done, you can edit the XML file and replace the Event ID information, e-mail subject and description and import afterwards. You’ll find the export function by right clicking the job and the import function is found by right clicking the ”Event Viewer Tasks” menu inside the Task Scheduler.
- First open the Task Scheduler located in the Administrative Tools folder…
- Expand the Task Sceduler Library, and right click ”Event Viewer Tasks”, and choose ”Create Basic Task”…
- In the Create Basic Task Wizard, fill out name and discription (optional) and click next…
- Click ”When a specific event is logged” and click next…
- From the ”Log” drop down menu, choose ”Microsoft-Windows-Backup/Operational”, from the ”Source” drop down menu, choose ”Backup” and type ”4” in the Event ID field.
- Click ”Send en e-mail” and click next…
- Fill out the fields as you like and click next… (Make sure that the SMTP server you choose is one you can relay e-mail through. There are unfortunately no option for configuring smtp authentication with this procedure).
- Click finish and the task will be saved and scheduled to run when the configured event is logged.
